insomnia-cartoonSleep is one of the most essential factors for proper and healthy functioning of the human mind and body. Depriving oneself of sufficient sleep can lead to serious health problems. Infants usually require almost 16 hours of sleep, teenagers 9 hours a day and adults should sleep for a minimum of 7-8hours a day. According to researchers and medical practitioners there are more than 70 different types of sleep disorders which can be classified under any of the three categories, i.e. lack of sleep or insomnia, disturbed sleep or obstructive sleep apnea and excessive sleep or narcolepsy. Among these insomnia is the most common sleep disorder.

Insomnia is a disorder where a person is unable to fall asleep however hard he tries, that may be due to unhealthy diet, emotional stress, tensions, diseases, mood swings, undisciplined or bad habits etc. Discoveries in Glasgow University pointed out that teaching children healthy sleep habits from a small age was essential to avoid them from developing sleep disorders later on.

Some points to be considered for better sleeping are:

Keep the mind relaxed a few hours before going to sleep
Take a warm bath, drink a glass of warm milk, listen to soothing music etc.
Avoid TV, computers or even exciting novels etc just before bedtime; that implies to both children and adults
Never drink caffeine before going to bed; in fact children should also be avoided from taking ice-tea, non-cola pops, chocolates or colas.
Sleep for at least 6-8 hours to boost energy levels throughout the day
Avoid harsh prescription drugs as a means of getting proper sleep
You can use natural sleep aids such as Lavender, Chamomile, Melantonin, Passionflower, and Valerian that are natural and effective sleep inducers.

Adequate amount of sleep is must for maximum productivity and proper functioning of the body; so sleep well and stay healthy!
