AYX3MMFrom past studies we have come to know that grape skin contains natural chemicals called polyphenols which can help control glucose levels in the human body. Very recently again a study by a team from the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna discovered that red wine contains high concentrations of these polyphenols that can help regulate levels of sugar in the blood.

Researchers believe that moderate drinking of red wine as part of a calorie controlled diet is always beneficial for health and could protect against type2 diabetes. According to the World Health Organization, more than 220 million people worldwide have diabetes and 90 per cent of them have Type2 diabetes, which is largely the result of excess body weight and physical inactivity. It has also been seen that high levels of sugar in the blood can cause tiredness, heart disease, strokes, blindness, nerve damage and kidney disease.

The team of researchers at Vienna found that polyphenols in wine bind to the receptor and that a small glass of wine contains enough of this chemical that can equal the activity of the potent diabetes drug Avandia. The new study also concluded the fact that polyphenol content of red wine is much higher as compared to any other type of wine. But again scientists at the University also confirmed that only moderate drinking is feasible and warned individuals on becoming addicted, since too much wine drinking can have an adverse effect and increase obesity or other health problems.
